"I wondered about using Speedball for physical therapy, that was something that made me go hmmm. I remember when I had lost my athletic ability and form due to toe surgery and was 45 1bs overweight (couldn't freakin' jump or get off the floor, thighs slappin' each other) :-D. Speedball was one of my first steps back to feeling good about myself. Anywho, let's do this!!!"
Angela Spencer

"As a sports doctor I always advocated core and neuromuscular coordination exercise, but until I started doing it myself, I really didn't know how something like 'Speedball' could make the changes so dramatic and in a relatively short period of time!! I recommend it to all of my patients highly. It does everything a dynamic program needs to do – core, balance, cardio, and ROM. What also surprised me is how few men attend these classes. Guys, you're missing the boat. And Steven is an excellent instructor!!..."Dr. Wayne Winnick, private practice NYC, consultant and treating doctor to the NYC Marathon & NY Mets

"I have been a devoted student of his class almost since the beginning and have been taking his class religiously every Monday night. This class sets the tone for my week and I look forward to it every Monday and have been for at least a year, it could be longer, as I can't remember when I first started taking his class...all I know is, I was hooked from day one. If you take a look at my attendance record, you will see that I have hardly missed checking in on Monday nights. The only reason why I even come to the gym on Monday's is because of hip boxing. The class is extremely motivating, fun, and Steve Feinberg's honest enthusiasm and love for this class shines through every week. You can tell that he just loves teaching it and his enthusiasm makes us love it too."
Sevia Hui

"As a former group fitness instructor, I thrive on energetic classes and instructors. I was thrilled to discover Speedball and Steve when I moved to New York City. Steve has such a positive and motivating teaching style that I made it a priority to attend his classes during my pregnancy. We modified the moves as necessary, and Steve provided many helpful tips that enabled me to stay active throughout the pregnancy. My son arrived 8 days late, and I continued attending class even after my official due date. Thank you to Steve and Speedball for helping my baby and me stay healthy and fit!"
Cindy Mahlberg

"Without Steve I would not take sports as seriously as I do today, and I wouldn't be playing to my full potential. "Teamwork guys!" Steve would scream in games. "[Steve] gives everyone in the room a fabulous workout that is rejuvenating for the spirit, fun and challenging for the mind, cathartic for the emotions, and safe and effective for the body, leading to increased strength, stamina, confidence, and coordination. I have been in the fitness business for over twenty years and no one has improved my speed and power as much as Steve..."Julia Evergreen Keefer, Ph.D.in Kinesiology, NYU Professor

"Speedball has taught me how to use all my muscles together to achieve a goal... And the encouragement of my instructors and seeing my weekly improvement have also made me believe that I can accomplish anything. I feel energized to go to the gym... "Melissa Brown

"As someone that does very high impact and high energy activities, it's difficult to find a class that is challenging both to your cardiovascular system and your coordination. Most classes are not difficult enough. For very avid athletes, Speedball is a great way to compliment your existing routine and can help improve and fine-tune existing techniques. It's fun and really increases your heart rate... "Ethel Alhale

"I look forward to going to class because the choreography makes you think and you feel as though you're getting such an intense cardio and strength training workout..."Jill LaVorgna

"What a workout! I had Steve on my show, Couch Potatoes on ABC News Now, and my abs spoke to me for three days."
Jim Karas, host of Couch Potatoes, ABC News Now

"I don't work out very often because of lower back pain. However, after just 10 minutes of Speedball, my back felt better than it had in years."Ted Allen, Food & Wine Connoisseur, Queer Eye For the Straight Guy

The genius of Steve's program stems from a deep knowledge and understanding of the most effective methods of excercise across a wide spectrum of traditional sports. During a single, 45 minute class, I experienced the power of boxing, the focus and elegance of martial arts, and the soul of capoiera. However, what ultimately makes speedball truly unique, is the passion and unadultered joy that Steve brings to each and every class he teaches.Rachel Bleiweiss-Sande

"An aerobic cardiovascular workout with rhythm, energy, poetry, comedy, history, while sweating, losing tons of calories and having a blast all in one! It can't get better and I am super excited to take more Speedball classes! Thank you for your creative out of the box aerobic workouts every week!"Tara Leifer

"Steve Feinberg teaches some awesome classes in NYC. Speedball, Kickboxing, functional sculpt class, kettlebells, just to name a few. I was entirely impressed by his content, presentation and skill. His musicality, expertise and structure is smart and well-crafted."

"Ever since the first day I started working out with Felice in Speedball I felt a significant difference. Yes I was tired and yes it pushed me but after the workout my body moved in a stronger way without feeling like I was using a lot of effort. I am a dancer and suddenly my legs lifted effortlessly, my jumps flew off the floor and I ran faster while dancing at rehearsals. Speedball allows your body to relax while also giving it a strength that surprises you once you realize a difference. There is something about the coordination of the exercises with the ball and the music that helps you forget about the actual effort you are exerting. Felice has a great way of breaking the exercises down as well so you can move fluidly through them, which is great for even the most uncoordinated person. With her fun, yet firm personality you are in the right hands while you groove through the exercises." –Stephanie Mas, Dancer

"Teaching Speedball to dancers was an amazing experience. Dancers are already well versed in their bodies so they get it, and they get it quickly and gracefully. It's the cardio that is always a challenge for dancers. Dancers can rehearse for several intense hours a week, but the process is always a tedious one, especially when just learning new choreography, so the heart rate never fully gets challenged. Running is always an option for dancers but it's too impacting on the joints. Dancers need their bodies to be fluid and mobile, not tight and rigid. Speedball gives them that cardio charge without the damaging impact. Never have I seen a more graceful room of people pushing their limits. Once it was time to hit the stage there was nothing less than true success." – Felice Gabrielle Romero, Speedball Instructor and Dancer

[TOP]

"As a dancer I think speedball is a great way to cross-train! It gives me an intense cardio workout while toning and shaping my muscles. The fast paced choreography keeps the workout interesting and heightens muscle awareness without putting strain on the joints. Felice has an incredible understanding of the human anatomy and her cues get my body exactly where it needs to be to obtain that sculpted look. I leave feeling toned and energized!" – Madeline Day, Dancer

"I have a hard time staying motivated to go to group fitness classes and speedball was fun, flew by, and was a great workout. I will defineitly keep up with it." – Leslie Scott, Director/Choreographer of Bodyart Dance

Question: There are people in this world who inspire us to achieve our maximum potential. Write an essay describing a coach, teacher, or person who has greatly influenced you and has driven you to the best of your abilities.

"My Essay: My soccer, personal trainer, Steve, has inspired me throughout my fall season, and will continue in the Spring soccer season. Steve has not just taught me soccer moves, stretches, and warm ups, but has taught me that anything is possible. 'Jessica, your a good soccer player, but you need to learn the word discipline,' Steve told me. He taught me to keep running when I thought I couldn't anymore, to push myself to my full potential, and that I can reach my goals if I'm willing to work. Steve has not just made me a better soccer player but a better person. He is always there for me, through laughs and tears. I can tell Steve anything and know that he will do the best he can to help me. He has taught me that every person deserves to be heard, respected, and appreciated. I learned if every individual works together we would immediately become a whole. Without Steve I would not take sports as seriously as I do today, and I wouldn't be playing to my full potential. 'Teamwork guys!' Steve would scream in games. The Eastmeadow Timber-wolves have learned to buckle down and work together with the help of Steve. Throughout the fall soccer season my personal soccer trainer has inspired me to be a better person. Steve has taught me that hard work, teamwork, respect, and appreciation is more important than any goals or footwork in the game of soccer. " – 12 yr-old Jess, East Meadow Long Island Timber Wolves

"I have taken Steve's classes every week for the past two years. He gives everyone in the room a fabulous workout that is rejuvenating for the spirit, fun and challenging for the mind, cathartic for the emotions, and safe and effective for the body, leading to increased strength, stamina, confidence, and coordination. I have been in the fitness business for over twenty years and no one has improved my speed and power as much as Steve. His sense of humor and ebullient energy infuse me with a positive, can-do spirit that lasts the whole week." – Julia Evergreen Keefer, Ph.D.in Kinesiology, NYU Professor

"As a former Division I athlete, my body has been conditioned to crave fierce workouts almost daily. However, after I graduated and hung up my cleats, I found that there was no workout that really kept me in top condition like all the 90+ minute games, practices, and weight sessions that I was used to.

That is until, I came across Speedball!

At first, I was weary of group "exercise classes" (I thought, "athletes don’t participate in those!"); but after meeting Steve and learning about Speedball, I was intrigued. A mix of cardio, weights, and plyometrics? I had to try it out! And, what happened? Lo and behold... I loved it, and became a very big fan! I now take Speedball classes as consistently as I can; and I have found that mixed with Shadow Do and running, I am in just as good shape as when I was a top athlete. In fact, I get stopped and complemented by complete strangers on my "buff" arms. Some might even argue my physique looks the best it ever has! I’ve even become a Shadow Do and an at-home, one-on-one private Speedball junkie!" – Andrea Trujillo

"Because of a hip problem I had to stop running, although I also did the typical "ab" work, cals, and stretching in the past. Since I started Speedball, my core is much stronger, my body is more toned, I dropped 5 lbs, and in general feel much better. As a sports doctor I always advocated core and neuromuscular coordination exercise, but until I started doing it myself, I really didn't know how something like Speedball could make the changes so dramatic and in a relatively short period of time!! I recommend it to all of my patients highly. It does everything a dynamic program needs to do – core, balance, cardio, and ROM. What also surprised me is how few men attend these classes. "I've been taking Steve's class for about a year now and I can enthusiastically report that the benefits I experience accrue with each class and continually present themselves in both expected and unexpected ways. I feel calmer – more confident and paradoxically – less confrontational when facing the daily barrages "mortal flesh is heir to" on the streets of the world's greatest and perhaps most stressful city. Life here in New York – with its hyper-competitive atmosphere and golden opportunities is both stimulating and frustrating – Speedball Fitness has absorbed and focused much of my frustrated energies enabling me to cope with these daily pressures with a measured and consistent posture. Additionally I find Steve to be both an extremely motivating teacher and a most entertaining personality – his talents, dedication to his craft and charisma make the class one of my most enjoyable hours and you literally have to pay me to miss it – that is – the only thing that comes between me and my Speedball Fitness – is a gig and my motivation to pay the bills." – Robert Kabakoff

"As an aerobic workout, Speedball class does a better job helping me meet my fitness goals than running ever did. I ran 3 to 5 days a week for 15 years. And whether on a treadmill or a track, I never saw the same results in muscle tone that I have after attending Speedball class once or twice a week for the past couple of months. Instead of just burning calories, the Speedball workout is helping me sculpt and tone my leg and core muscle groups. And when I can manage it, using a six pound ball for even part of the class really makes my arms and shoulders work.

I like that it's not another bouncy aerobics class -- I have never looked good in leg warmers! The music helps take my mind off the workday -- I often try to get to class during my lunch break -- and I always get back to my desk with more energy.

The movements felt awkward at first but I don't think I had ever picked up a medicine ball before that first class. But Michelle pays close attention to form and it doesn't take long to realize the benefits of all that hard work." – Brian Ross

"The truth is, I'm in the best shape of my life. In high school, I was very active and a three sport athlete. Then in college and after college, squeezing in a workout was always low on the list of priorities. Combine that with a slowing metabolism, and I definitely got soft. These days I actually feel fierce. It's such a cheesy word, but the truth is, I feel like I could accomplish any physical challenge. And I attribute that to the true improvement in my increased strength, stamina and endurance, as well as my mental attitude.

Speedball has taught me how to use all my muscles together to achieve a goal. Before Speedball, I was very bottom strong (and bottom heavy). Speedball, Speedball core and Form & Function have helped me even things out. My arms, my shoulders and my core have now caught up to my thighs and I look better and perform better. And the encouragement of my instructors and seeing my weekly improvement have also made me believe that I can accomplish anything. I feel energized to go to the gym – and I like what I see as I'm performing the class in front of the mirror.

Before Speedball, I struggled to run three miles in under 30 minutes. Not only was I huffing and puffing...I was also terribly bored. Last week I did 6 in less than an hour. I attribute this to an improvement in my physical capabilities, as well as a new connection with my body and my muscles that give me the mental stamina to want to continue and finish – and actually enjoy physical activity. Push-ups? A year ago...forget about it. Now, I can do 35 in a row with proper form on my feet. Speedball has also improved my yoga. I used to struggle with poses, and the core strength I've acquired makes the poses not only easier but enjoyable!

Speedball has also helped me in my work. I am in a very stressful industry, and some days when I walk into class my head is spinning with all the things I need to get done or all the things that went wrong that day. By the time I leave, those things have magically prioritized and seem much more manageable. In a way I reset my batteries when I'm in class. The tension somehow diminishes. When I leave, the stress is less and my mood is better. This also gives me something to look forward to throughout the day because I know relief is in site." – Melissa Brown

"The combination of Speedball with my other aerobic activities (i.e. running and kickboxing) has increased my muscular and cardiovascular endurance.

The twisting involved in Speedball movements has strengthened my abs – I actually have visible stomach muscles– and my lower back tremendously. The twisting motions also go hand-in-hand with kickboxing and have helped my boxing technique a great deal.

As someone that does very high impact and high energy activities, it's difficult to find a class that is challenging both to your cardiovascular system and your coordination. Most classes are not difficult enough. For very avid athletes, Speedball is a great way to compliment your existing routine and can help improve and fine-tune existing techniques. It's fun and really increases your heart rate. I would definitely recommend this for both short and long distance runners that need a workout that will be challenging for their muscles and cardiovascular system and a good break from the repetitive movements of running.

I generally take Speedball twice a week and have been doing it for a year and a half. I would probably add one more Speedball class to my routine but it doesn't work with my work schedule." – Ethel Alhale

"As an athlete, training hard and pushing my body to new limits is something that I do regularly. Speedball uses more of my core muscles and continually challenges me physically so my muscles don't get used to the same exercise day after day.

I look forward to going to class because the choreography makes you think and you feel as though you're getting such an intense cardio and strength training workout." – Jill LaVorgna

"After my first Speedball class I knew I was hooked. Sometimes in group fitness classes you feel that you just need to get through the class, but in Speedball I actually want to get through it. I want to work and push myself five more minutes, ten more minutes; I want to prove to myself that I can make it through one more combination. I always leave the class feeling physically stronger and in a better mood than when I first walked in. For me Speedball is as rewarding as it is challenging." – Estée Fremont

"I started taking Steve's Speedball class last summer (when it was A LOT less crowded) and hated it. I mean it – I dreaded the class every week and, once in the class, counted the minutes until it was over. 'Thank god it's not a full hour!' I remember telling myself. But I didn't have time to get to the gym much during the week and felt that Speedball combined with Steve's kickboxing class – which I really enjoyed – would maximize the effect of my time spent at the gym. To add to my misery, I was sore for at least 2-3 days after Speedball. I had good Speedball classes where I was super coordinated and bad classes where it looked it I started doing Speedball that week. But gradually I wasn't as sore from using the 6 lb ball, my arms started to have a more toned look, and my abdominals/core was strengthening. In December I had an emergency appendectomy and stayed away from the gym for 6 weeks. I was overjoyed to finally return to Speedball in February but started with a 2 lb ball and gradually worked back up to a 6 lb ball.

Speedball has increased my endurance, balance and coordination substantially. Mentally, Speedball has brought out a determination and toughness in me (to finish each class) that I never previously experienced while exercising. One weekend I started going to both the Saturday and Sunday Speedball classes. I initially cringed at the hour-long class on Sunday but the first time I completed it was a new high. I felt on top of the world, like I could do anything. A couple weeks later I realized I was completely addicted to the class, the challenge, the 6 lb ball. Kickboxing, which I used to love, has become a distant second to Speedball. If I miss a kickboxing class, no big deal. If I miss Speedball, I'm bummed the rest of the week until the next weekend rolls around. I don't have to go to Speedball. I GET to go to Speedball." – Gwen Snyder

"I have been working out consistently for about 8 years, and I felt like I had reached a plateau. I wasn't learning anything new, and my body wasn't responding the way I thought it should. I discovered Speedball a few months ago. It has taken my workouts up a notch as I have learned new techniques and am building strength. I love how Speedball combines a range of simple movements for a challenging, yet doable workout.

I have also been able to apply the core principles from Speedball (retraction and rotation) to my other workouts. It has forced me to become aware of my form and my core.

Let's not forgot Steve Feinberg's contagious enthusiasm and energy. It's an important component of the class." – Lori Eisenberg

"I have to admit I was a little skeptical when my friend first dragged me into a Speedball class. You just swing a ball around for an hour? And this is supposed to be good workout? Well, I learned very quickly that yes, you do swing a ball around for an hour. And yes, this is not only a good workout, it's the best workout I've had in years!

Any shred of skepticism disappeared within minutes of taking the class. I began to focus on my posture and my form, and was able to follow along pretty easily to the choreography, which was set to fun, loud music. As the class went on, I found that my mind was really connecting to what I wanted my body to achieve. And surprisingly, when I looked at myself in the mirror, I was actually doing it!

Coming into the class, I didn't realize that this little weighted ball coupled with high-energy cardio and toning moves would have such an impact on my body. The lifting, the bending, the stretching and oh yes...those lunges. Every move was coordinated to a tee to make the most of this one-hour class and this little weighted ball.

I was sore for days after Speedball...but sore in a good way. Sore in the way that you know your body is reacting to movements it hasn't done before. Sore in the sense that your body feels more toned, and your core seems tighter and your posture seems a little better. I love that feeling.

Now my only issue with Speedball is that it's not yet available where I live. I took this class at a friend's gym in New York, and I live in Miami. Do us all a favor and bring Speedball to Miami!!" – Jodi Weitz

"I started taking Shadow Do as a way to cross-train for triathlons. After 6 months of taking the class I had improved my time in a half ironman by an entire hour. Not only was I faster but I felt better when I finished and recovered more quickly. Shadow Do has been excellent for cross-training and is also a fun way to change up your cardio routine!"

My experience with Form and Function

Ten minutes before my first Form and Function class as the studio started filling up I did not really know what to expect. I recall Steve being recommended to me by a number of instructors and immediately understood why as soon as he selected his album as began conversing with the class. Here, I am going to identify four items: energy orchestration, safety, progressive challenge, and therapeutic logic, and discuss how the Form and Function experience is valuable in Steve Feinberg’s delivery of these four items.

Steve was able to embrace and engage the constellation of emotional sates within the class with his genuine attitude of non-judgment, enthusiasm, and positivity. Steve adjusted the energy within the studio by disarming and energizing the nervous and droopy students while getting the overly energized and excited students, myself included, to concentrate and focus. It was very clear that the zeitgeist was practice and discovery and not performance and perfection.

Steve introduced movements and intensity levels that recruited antagonist, agonist, and supportive muscles that "neuromuscularly" taught me what it feels like to perform work and how to use my muscles as a system rather than an imbalanced and Herculean sequence of isolated efforts. The result: learning and safety, I not only understood cognitively how my muscles are supposed to work, but gained a physical understanding of how to systemically broker force amongst my skeletal, connective, and muscle tissue to preserve my safety while I apply these mechanics to fitness and everyday life.

Steve introduced an effective approach to progressive challenge, a fantastic departure from the traditional strain-till-pain approach. Analogous to the "Pilates" of strength training, Form and Function has a "smart" and almost counterintuitive way of stressing the body that honors… well its form and function while, I’m sure Hans Selye would agree, not stressing you out physiologically or psychologically. I am going to insist that you take the class to experience exactly what I mean; suffice it to say that Form and Function exerts controlled sequences of progressively challenging intensities in a way that exerts the body but does not wear you out, thus keeping you motivated and engaged to progress your fitness level accordingly without injury.

The spirit of Form and Function recognizes the body as an instrument of healing and Steve has fortified it with a comprehensive and robust understanding of biomechanics and physiology. It is no accident that Form and Function engineers yours body to manage stressors without compromising its integrity. For instance, as mentioned above Steve’s delivery of mechanics teaches the student how use their muscles as a system as opposed to just performing a bunch of isolated movements. This preemptive and preventative approach doesn’t unmercifully teardown muscle tissue with the hope that you will rebuild it somehow; it trains your body to effectively prepare for and manage physical stress while avoiding injury.

Steve Feinberg’s delivery of energy orchestration, safety, progressive challenge, and therapeutic logic in Form and Function is a cardinal differentiator from traditional group fitness modalities and takes a preemptive and preventative approach that actually builds your body systemically; isn’t that why we aspire toward fitness in the first place?
I almost forgot, there’s a fifth element, it’s a lot of FUN! So come and take it.

Speedball Journal:

My whole life I have been involved in organized sports, a multi-sport athlete in high school and then D1 lacrosse player with a vigorous workout schedule in college. I practiced for two hours a day, six days a week. On top of that, I lifted three times a week, and conditioned twice. Needless to say I never had to plan a workout for myself, my life was dictated by sports. After graduating I found it difficult to get into a routine. I wasn’t used to running in solitude on the treadmill forever and got bored easily, and I couldn’t bring myself to do any of the 45-minute lifts that I was accustomed to. When I found speedball I immediately enjoyed it. Here is a class that kept me motivated and entertained, especially being surrounded by other motivated athletes. It’s a challenge with all the benefits of a cardio workout and the toning effects of a lift.

Week One: 156 lbs.
Last night I did my third speedball class and it felt really good. I have lost 2 pounds since I started doing the class last and I feel motivated to work out between classes to keep up the benefits of it. My shins, which are typically problematic with any type of squatting, have started to loosen up and feel better, which has helped with running. Next week I want to try and do three classes, I feel good after class and it has inspired me to make healthier choices.

Week Two: 154 lbs.
This week I feel better. The class has gotten easier in terms of knowing the movements, but its always changing so its definitely still just as challenging of a workout. I actually feel like I am getting a better work out now that I am more familiar with the class and my form is getting better. (Steve might disagree:) Its only been 2 weeks but I feel a little bit firmer and I have more energy to work out on days that I don’t go to class. Plus working out with Steve has been an extremely motivating experience for me. He keeps the energy level of the class incredibly high and makes you want to work harder. Maybe its because he sings the whole time and can somehow still manage to do all the moves with you?? Either way, it has been motivating me to get to the gym more regularly.

Week Three: 151 lbs.
This week I have upped the number of classes I am going to. I enjoy the class so much that I decided to join the gym that Steve teaches at so that I can attend multiple nights a week. This week I definitely notice a difference. My stomach is flatter and more toned and I see a noticeable difference in my arms and shoulders. I am getting a lot stronger and my legs feel better. I have terrible shins and had surgery on both of them right after graduating college. I actually feel like the class is helping me stretch them out and heal the injuries. Going up stairs doesn’t hurt as much anymore and my form and endurance has increased when I run on days off. After noticing a difference this week I started to get motivated to eat a lot healthier. I have actually been having breakfast and trying to make healthier choices. I want the hard work I am doing in the gym to pay off and I realize this has to be a lifestyle change.

Week Four: 151 lbs.
I did not lose any weight this week but I think it is because I am gaining muscle…which looks (and feels) a lot better. My thighs have gotten smaller and have noticeably less cellulite. I also feel better and my eating habits have improved. I actually have more energy in the mornings too and have been getting to work earlier. Who knew my whole life would improve! Haha.

Steve has been giving me some workouts to do on days when I don’t go to a speedball class. They are great for cross training, although difficult, but they have helped me. Steve has also been a huge help with keeping me on track and improving my form. He seems to know everyone in class simultaneously give everyone his attention. For such a big class, you really feel like you get personal instruction from him. I have even started going to his other classes because I find him motivating and enjoy his energy.
