Michael Barrett

Muscle mass and bone density: his doctor’s explanation of the relationship between the two inspired Michael to make a personal plan for long-term physical health that included weight training and group fitness. His experience as a former teacher plus his new passion for exercise created a happy combination for Michael’s 2003 debut as a group fitness instructor in Portland, Oregon.

Originally an instructor of boxing, kickboxing and core fitness, Michael has expanded his repertoire to include body sculpting and a rigorous abdominals class plus Speedball. He believes that fitness is ultimately about paying respect to one’s body and mind. With respect as a prime motivator, good health and beauty are natural by-products.

Michael teaches his students about the three components to looking and feeling great. The first, genetics, we cannot control, but we can choose to use what we have to maximize our potential. The second component is nutrition. A balanced diet of natural foods is the best bet for good health. And how about those food labels? Knowledge is power, so read them! Thirdly, exercise builds muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance, and a positive self-image, all of which contribute to the healthy mind and body.

Michael chose to teach Speedball, because it incorporates rhythm and comprehensive physical movements that challenge strength and endurance in a seamless progression. Like his other classes, Speedball is a form of exercise that accommodates both the strengths and limitations that students bring to the fitness studio, regardless of age or ability. His goal is to inspire others to do their best at all times and have fun doing it.

Michael lives and works in New York City but continues to travel the world in search of new inspiration, motivation and knowledge. He has a Bachelors of Arts in German and Political Science. Backed by his American Council on Exercise (ACE) certification, he is a proud employee of Equinox Fitness Clubs and is an enthusiastic contributor to his students’ strong muscles and bones.
